Tips for a Stress-Free Newborn Photoshoot
Welcoming a newborn into the world is a life-changing, joyful event. One of the best ways to celebrate this special time is with a professional newborn photoshoot. But I understand—it can also be a bit overwhelming! Between managing a baby’s schedule and the pressure of making everything look perfect, it can become a stressful experience.
The good news? It doesn’t have to be. With a little preparation, you can enjoy a stress-free newborn photoshoot that results in beautiful photos you’ll cherish forever. Here are some tips to help you prepare and make the most of your session:
1. Book Your Session Early
Newborn photoshoots typically happen within the first two-three weeks after birth, when babies are still small, sleepy, and flexible. To ensure availability with your preferred photographer (hopefully me!) book the session during your pregnancy! This gives you peace of mind and time to adjust your plans around the baby’s arrival.
2. Choose the Right Photographer
Not all photographers specialize in newborn photography, so it’s essential to choose one who has experience and expertise in this area. Look for a photographer who has a portfolio showcasing their newborn work, ideally with a focus on safety, comfort, and natural posing. You want someone who can guide you through the process and make you feel at ease.
3. Keep Baby’s Schedule in Mind
Newborns thrive on routine, so it's a good idea to schedule the photoshoot around your baby’s sleep and feeding schedule. Try to time the session when your baby is well-fed and likely to be sleepy. Avoid scheduling during a time when your baby tends to be fussy, as this could lead to extra stress during the shoot.
4. Prepare Your Home (or Location)
Whether you’re doing an at-home session or heading to the photographer’s studio, like Haze Studio in Grandville, MI, make sure the space is prepared for a calm and relaxed shoot. Ensure the room is warm—newborns are most comfortable in temperatures between 75-80°F. Have extra blankets, wipes, and diapers on hand for any little accidents. If the shoot is at home, tidy up the areas you want photographed, but don’t stress about perfection or cleaning up the whole house. It’s all about the baby & I promise your photographer will not judge your home!
5. Dress Comfortably
For the shoot itself, simplicity is key. Dress your baby in something soft and easy to remove, as many photographers like to do close-up shots of the baby’s bare skin. Many photographers offer outfits for baby. Check with your photographer if that’s something you’re interested in! When it comes to you, wear neutral or soft tones—these won’t distract from the baby and will complement the overall mood of the photos.
6. Pack Baby Essentials
If you’re heading to a photographer’s studio, don’t forget the essentials. Pack extra feeding supplies (whether it’s formula, breastmilk, or pumping gear), pacifiers, and diapers. It’s also a good idea to bring a change of clothes for both you and your baby, just in case of any accidents.
7. Don’t Aim for Perfection
Newborns are unpredictable—and that’s part of the charm. You might not get the perfect shot every time, or even a sleepy babe, and that’s okay! Embrace the candid moments—those yawns, stretches, and the occasional cry can lead to the most genuine and heartwarming photos. A relaxed attitude will help you enjoy the experience without stressing over every little detail.
8. Give Yourself Time
Newborn shoots can take a little longer than you might expect. Babies need breaks for feeding, soothing, and diaper changes, so don’t rush the session. Make sure you have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the process. This way, you won’t feel rushed and can focus on capturing beautiful moments with your baby.
9. Trust Your Photographer
A good newborn photographer knows how to handle babies gently and safely, so trust them to guide the session. They have experience in calming babies and capturing beautiful moments, even if that means taking things slowly. Communicate any preferences you have beforehand, but don’t feel pressured to micromanage the shoot. Your photographer is there to create magical memories for you!
10. Stay Calm and Enjoy the Moment
Finally, remember that this photoshoot is all about celebrating the beginning of your journey with your baby. While it’s natural to want everything to go smoothly, the most important thing is enjoying the time together. Stay calm, take deep breaths, and remember that the memories you're making are far more important than getting the "perfect shot."
A newborn photoshoot should be a beautiful and stress-free experience, allowing you to preserve those precious first moments with your baby. By planning ahead, keeping your expectations realistic, and trusting your photographer, you’ll be able to capture stunning images that will last a lifetime. Most importantly, take time to enjoy the experience and savor these unforgettable moments with your newborn!
